Ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are all toxic to fish and must be quickly and effectively removed from the aquarium. A proper functioning biological filter will do this, and help establish a happy, healthy tank.
- Nitrite Poisoning is caused by adding more fish before nitrifiers grow enough to match the level of ammonia being produced. Nitrite is even more toxic to fish as ammonia and can kill fish.
- Water used to fill the aquarium often has nitrates in it. In the United States, drinking water may have nitrates as high as 40 ppm. Before adding water to your tank test, it for nitrates so you know if the levels are unusually high in your water source.
- A nitrate (NO3) level below 40 ppm is considered safe, but lower is better. Nitrite (NO2) should always be zero. A few things that will reduce nitrate are feeding no more than the fish actually eat in a couple of minutes, changing 25 percent of the water every week, and avoiding overcrowding.
- Preventing Aquarium Nitrate Nitrates are the end result of the nitrogen cycle – or oxidation process – that begins with ammonia . One step ahead and the main source of ammonia of course, is organic matter, which is anything organic in nature that decomposes.
